چکیده

Interpretation of phase-noise generating mechanism in oscillators relies on approximate and numerical calculations for analysis, and simulation tools for synthesis. In this paper, a comprehensive, yet intuitive, phase-noise model is derived as a function of oscillator circuit parameters, suiting both analysis and synthesis of oscillators. Contributions of all noise sources to the phase noise of bipolar inductance–capacitance (LC) voltage-controlled oscillators have been determined using spectral noise analysis. For the verification of the phase-noise model, a bipolar LC-oscillator has been designed that realizes a phase noise of 106 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset from a 5.7 GHz-band carrier while drawing 4.8 mA from a 2.2 V supply. The results obtained from the phase-noise model agree well with simulation and measurement results of the LC-oscillator designed.

The Transient Behavior of LC and Ring Oscillators under External Frequency Injection

In this work, time domain analysis is used to solve Adler’s equation in order to obtain the required time, for an oscillator under external injection, reaching the steady-state condition. Mathematical approach has been applied to fully describe the transient of frequency acquisition in injection-locked LC and Ring oscillators considering their time-varying nature. Then, the analysis is verifie...

A Phase Noise Reduction Technique in LC Cross-coupled Oscillators with Adjusting Transistors Operating Regions

In this paper, an intuitive analysis of a phase noise reduction technique is done, and then a modified structure is proposed to achieve higher phase noise reduction than the original one. This method reduces the impact of noise sources on the phase noise by decreasing closed-loop gain in zero-crossings points and moving this high closed-loop gain to the non-zero-crossings points. This reduction...

Analysis of Oscillation Amplitude and Phase Error in Multiphase LC Oscillators

Abstract   This work proposes a novel method to find the phase error and oscillation amplitude in multiphase LC oscillators. A mathematical approach is used to find the relationship between every stage's output phase and its coupling factor. To much more general analysis, every stage assumed to have a different coupling factor. The mismatches in LC tanks are considered as the main source of pha...

Analysis of emitter degenerated LC oscillators using bipolar technologies

The effects of emitter degeneration on the oscillation frequency, output noise and tuning range of an emitter degenerated LC oscillator designed using bipolar transistors (BJT) is analyzed. Simulation results show increased oscillation frequency, tuning range and carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR). Design guidelines for emitter degenerated LC oscillators are also given.
